Travel Information
Toronto, on the north shore of Lake Ontario, is the largest of Canada's vibrant urban centres. It is the hub of the nation's commercial, financial, industrial, and cultural life, and is the capital of the Province of Ontario.
Toronto is ranked as the safest large metropolitan area in North America and is known as one of the most liveable and multicultural urban places in the world. With a population of 2.48 million (and 5.5 million in the GTA - Greater Toronto Area) Toronto is the fifth most populous municipality in North America and the wide diversity of its population is reflected in the over 140 languages and dialects spoken by residents.
Toronto is a collection of neighbourhoods, each diverse area has a distinct personality. From the hip shopping districts of Yorkville, the Fashion District and Leslieville to the large shopping centres, such as Eaton Centre and Yorkdale, and from the architecturally stunning Victorian and Edwardian-era residential neighbourhoods like Rosedale, Cabbagetown and the Annex to the ethnic neighbourhoods like Chinatown, Greektown, Little Italy and Little India, one can find almost anything. Take a stroll through the unique galleries and shops in the Distillery District, St. Lawrence Market or Kensington Market or marvel at the mixture of periods and architectural styles in the buildings in Toronto.
Toronto's most prominent and famous landmark is the CN Tower, which stands at 553.3 metres (1,814 ft) tall. Toronto is also the starting point of the world's longest street, Yonge St. Starting at the City's lakeshore, it runs north for 1,896 km. Toronto also boasts a vibrant cultural and arts community with 125 museums and public archives, 50 ballet and dance companies, 6 opera companies, two symphony orchestras. Some notable venues include; Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, Roy Thomson Hall, the Princess of Wales Theatre, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Massey Hall, the Toronto Centre for the Arts, the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres and the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts (originally the "O'Keefe Centre" and formerly the "Hummingbird Centre"). Toronto is also home to the Royal Ontario Museum, The Art Gallery of Ontario, The Gardiner Museum, The Bata Shoe Museum and the Ontario Science Center. As well, the Toronto Zoo, one of the largest in the world, is home to over 5,000 animals representing over 460 distinct species. There are also a number of amusement parks within the city, including Ontario Place on the waterfront or Centreville on the Toronto Islands, or take a short trip north of Toronto to visit Canada's Wonderland.
Toronto is also the only Canadian city with representation in five major league sports, with teams in the National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, Canadian Football League, and Major League Soccer. Major sports venues include the Rogers Centre and Air Canada Centre. Toronto is also referred to as "The City Within a Park" as there are numerous public parks and green spaces along with 90km of paved trails for walkers, joggers and cyclists that link the city's communities together. Visit Ashbridge's Bay and the Beaches in the East, or the central parks of Trinity-Bellwoods and the Harbourfront trails/parks, or visit the massive High Park in the West. One can even take a short ferry ride to the Toronto Islands to enjoy the rustic neighbourhood and beautiful beaches.
Toronto has something for every individual. With a vast interconnected public transit system of subways, streetcars and buses along with friendly and approachable residents, getting around Toronto is easy as you enjoy the many attractions or look for the perfect meal in whatever style or ethnicity you desire.
